How to tackle the broken PLAUBEL Makina II

Press Camera

1930-1939

The camera was sent to me for repair. The shutter lever was blocked due to improper cocking.

Shutter cocking cannot be done if the rim indicates T or B. If the rim is set to B or T the shutter can be opened and closed just by pressing the release knob

without cocking the shutter lever.

To get to the shutter, one has to unscrew the lens which is very easy. Turn it anti clockwise and lay it apart on a safe place.

The camera front.

Unscrew lens and use a good spanner wrench to unscrew the ring which holds the shutter to the camera front. Please be very careful not to touch the shutter blades.

Now the shutter rim set can be taken of.

Note the position on the back of the rim set which moves the exposing setting on the shutter.

Now turn the camera around and remove the small black ring which holds the shutter to the camera house.

Next unscrew the four screws on the front of the camera and the front section will come off of the camera.

Don't forget to remove the electric wire from the flash connector. Leave the cocking lever as it is. No need to remove it.

On the left the empty camera house with the focusing screw and two spacers. To free the shutter from the front plate unscrew the connection with the shutter release assembly.

Unhook the shutter from the front plate and remove the shutter from the plate.

Overview of the previous steps on my workbench.

Now the camera is dismantled, you may take a break and after that spend some time cleaning all the parts.

Finding the cause of the malfunction was quite a job. Cocking the shutter didn't work at all. It was stuck and I had to disassemble the shutter speed ring, the shutter the shutter speed cam and the cocking rack to find out

what was the cause of the malfunction.

Despite close investigation I could not find any explanation for the failure, so I decided to make it easy and disassembled one of my identical shutters to be able to compare both cocking racks to

see what was wrong.

After having done that I clearly could see that the malfunction was caused by a bent shutter release link.

On the left you see the bent link. On the right the good working one.

Setting straight up the link was the easiest thing to do, making a new spring (the old one was lost during the session) cost me more than two hours.

Reassembling the shutter and replacing it into the front plate was the easiest thing of the repair.

Don't forget to solder the electric wire to the flash connector.

Testing the shutter exposure times and the flash connection.

The very satisfying result is a perfect working Plaubel Makina II camera.

Ready for use.
